The headline from this week that gave me pause was this one: "Prions That Cause Mad Cow Disease Can Spread Through Air." Wow! Anyone who has at least casually followed CJD and Mad Cow associated likely infection through blood transmission or ingestion - and certainly not airborne transmission. The implications for food processing and healthcare are going to prove significant and costly. When it comes to medicine, so often certainty is often turned on its head and what was considered a truth is spun to an untruth. This headline is a reminder to us all to be sure that as we deliver care, we periodically question assumptions, not just trust in long standing "truths" but put them to the test.
