WATER, WATER, EVERYWHERE – IS THAT DROP SAFE TO DRINK? – ISSUE NO. 20
October 1, 2009
Often we feature stories that, while not strictly related to the healthcare industry, echo the challenges we face. Last week, the EPA ordered airlines to test and disinfect the tap water used on airplanes. This was in response to outbreaks of waterborne pathogens on planes.
In healthcare, we deal with water quality issues all the time. There are stringent regulations on the water used in kidney dialysis. AAMI TIR34, as well as other AAMI documents, spells out the requirements and qualities of the water used in reprocessing. Waterborne pathogens are also a real concern in stored flexible endoscopes.
Water, it is everywhere and we need to be sure it is safe for the use at hand.
