Thursday, April 22, we celebrate Earth Day. I have some good memories of Earth Day. The first one is from when I was in high school in 1970. Recently, I was driving by my old high school and stopped to see the tree my class planted on the first official Earth Day in 1970. It is still there. I'm unsure of what type of tree it is, I should find out, but it was nice to see that after 40 plus years it is still growing strong. My next memory deals with my oldest son Nicholas. He was born on Earth Day. He is what we call an "Earth Day Baby." I will not reveal his age, but he is over 21. Nicholas has a love for the land. I am very proud of Nicholas and his younger brother Peter because they were part of a "grass roots effort" of people who started our community garden three years ago. I attribute Nicholas's love for gardening and the outdoors to the "mystical" fact that he was born on Earth Day. Peter just likes being outdoors, so combined they make a good team that wants to make a difference. So let us all enjoy Earth Day this week in our own special way. My boys will be working in the garden, weather permitting.
